Sahara Vintage Beni Mguild Rug

‹Return to Previous Page
Description

Description

The Beni M’guild region in the western Middle Atlas of Morocco can be quite harsh in the winters months, so their rugs are very thick in pile to protect them against the cold.

Woven by the women on a vertical loom they tend to have simple geometric designs running down or across the carpet with a background of red, brown, white or sometimes blue.

Handwoven Hanbel Rug

Each of these beautiful pieces are found and hand select by me during my sourcing trips throughout Morocco. This newly made piece was designed by Afous Ghoufous, or hand in hand Cooperative a village outside of the city of Ouarzazate in southern Morocco. I began working with the ladies here at the cooperative in early 2019 after a sourcing trip to Ouarzazate. All proceeds from purchases go directly to the weaver and the group fund in order to build more space and programs for other women to work.   In this region, they use natural wool and dyes from Turmeric and pomegranate skin to create beautiful shades of yellow.  Also, onion or hibiscus to create the shades of pinks and reds to Pine used to create the shades of brown
